Sean Lynch Named Next CIS Headmaster
Sean Lynch Named Next CIS Headmaster

July 22, 2016

Dear CIS Community,

I am very pleased to announce that the Board of Governors has appointed Sean Lynch to succeed Dr. Ted Faunce as the next Headmaster of CIS. Ted Faunce has served in the role since 2006. Sean, who will be joining us in August 2018, is currently the Headmaster of the Lycée Français de New York, a leading dual-language independent school in New York City, a position that he has held since 2011.

Sean is a United States, French and Irish national. He is fluent in English and French, speaks German and Spanish, and has also recently started to learn Mandarin. Sean has a distinguished academic and professional background; he obtained a BA in History with Honors and Distinction from Yale University and spent two years as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School before moving back to Paris, where he grew up and was educated, to complete the equivalent of a Master's degree and doctoral studies at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques ("Sciences Po"). Sean remained at Sciences Po for a further ten years as a lecturer in political science.

After obtaining Master's degrees in Educational Administration and Curriculum Development from Michigan State University, Sean then embarked on his teaching career and joined the Lycée International in St. Germain-en-Laye, outside of Paris, where he taught history and geography. Sean continued there for a total of fifteen years, and was Headmaster of the American Section of the Lycée International for five years, from 2006 to 2011. His predecessor in that role was none other than Ted Faunce.

Sean will have been Headmaster at the Lycée Français de New York (LFNY) for seven years by the time he joins us in Hong Kong in the summer of 2018. The school has 1370 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, hailing from some fifty countries. Sean has done an outstanding job at the LFNY; among his noteworthy achievements is piloting the design and implementation of a strategic vision that has placed the Lycée among the top private schools in New York - an educational environment that is one of the most intensely entrepreneurial and competitive in the world, much like that of Hong Kong. Sean has received several awards over the course of his career, including the celebrated Klingenstein Fellowship for independent school leaders from Columbia University's Teachers College, which he will undertake in January 2018.

My fellow Governors and I feel that we are very fortunate that we have been able to attract such a highly accomplished headmaster to CIS, which is a testament to the formidable and growing reputation built up under the leadership of Ted Faunce that places the School at the forefront of international education. Sean has over ten years' experience as Headmaster at two large and prestigious dual-language international schools, and will bring with him a passion for teaching and learning, a wealth of proven leadership skills, and a record of innovation that will build on the strong and solid foundations laid down by Ted over the past ten years.

Sean and his wife, Molly, have two daughters, Esther and Myriam, aged thirteen and eleven, who have been studying Mandarin since Grade 3 and whom we will happily welcome to CIS as students.

Given his contractual commitments to the Lycée Français de New York, Sean will not be joining us until August 2018. Li Bin, Deputy Head of School, has agreed to act as our Interim Head of School for the 2017-18 academic year. Sean will be a frequent visitor to Hong Kong and to CIS before and throughout this interim period, and I look forward to introducing him to many of you during that time.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Brandler
