Service Learning
Service is an integral part of the learning experience at CIS. Through service we develop empathy, cultivate an attitude of gratitude, gain knowledge of real needs in the community, and use and hone our individual strengths to take action.
Our Mission
Chinese International School prepares its students to be compassionate, ethical and responsible individuals, contributing to communities, and respectful of other views, beliefs and cultures. We offer a comprehensive service programme that exemplifies what we believe about the way we should treat each other. Service allows our school to contribute to and make a positive impact on local communities. Currently, we have strong relationships with 25 Hong Kong NGOs that serve various disadvantaged communities and causes around our home city. Our service is action-focused and an integrated part of the learning programme. We consider service to be an integral part of holistic learning. It provides hands-on, real-world learning that fosters caring members of society while addressing the needs of others.
Our Service Model
Outcomes
A great service project will help you do everything on the list below. Which of these goals has your project helped you to reach? For each one, provide an example or two of how your project has helped you to accomplish it.
• Increase awareness of your strengths and areas of growth
• Develop new skills
• Plan and initiate activities
• Show perseverance and commitment
• Undertake new challenges
• Work collaboratively with others
• Engage with issues of global importance
• Consider the ethical implications of your project
We encourage our students to be smart about service and provide them with thought-provoking questions to aid in the reflection process.
Exemplar Service Projects
Below includes examples of recent service projects by our Secondary students.
Drop in the Ocean (DITO)
Restoring the natural beauty of Hong Kong’s beaches, Beach Cleanup hopes to inspire all to eliminate single-use plastic from our waste stream in our daily lives. Furthermore, through raising awareness of marine wildlife and sustainable living, Beach Cleanup's ultimate goal is to construct a positive systemic change.
Speak-out ELCHK
Speak out (ELCHK) has linked up with families in a public housing estate in Chai Wan whose median monthly income is under HK$13,000. CIS students volunteer weekly on Saturday mornings either at the school or virtually to improve the students' English speaking abilities, through games and structured lessons. Overall, the aim is to interact with underprivileged children to improve their confidence in speaking.
COEXIST
COEXIST aims to empower the large community of migrant workers through music and performance; to make them feel cared for, respected, and acknowledged for the incredible role they play as the backbone of our city; to provide a safe space where they can explore their creative potential; to give them a platform to share their stories through the arts; to foster the spirit of inclusiveness and respect amongst the general Hong Kong community.
Free Clinic
Free Clinic is a collaboration between students at Chinese International School and medical professionals at various private clinics in Hong Kong with the aim of providing high-quality medical treatment to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it.
Creative Arts, Creative Minds
Creative Art, Creative Mind allows local school students to use art to think creatively while practising their English verbal/writing skills. Through Art and English, they will also be able to learn about humanities and history, subjects that are not emphasized in their school curriculum. By the end of each 6-week-session, students will have created their own comic book/picture book.
