One Country, Two Schools (OCTS) Project is a Chinese International School Project Week Trip which has been operating since 2002. The OCTS Project is facilitated by the NGO, Zigen, a development organization which has a focus on Primary and Secondary Education for minority girls within rural China. They have been operating for more than twenty years. The OCTS Project has just completed it’s fourth project in the Miao village of Fang Xiang, located in south east Guizhou. Fang Xiang has a population of approximately 1000, with it’s main economic activity being subsistence farming, taking place on extensive rice terraces carved out of the mountainous environment. In terms of standards of living, conditions are very basic, with limited running water and no sewerage. Electricity is now available and the village has been linked by a dirt road, to the county seat of Lei Shan, since 2001. Communications within and beyond Fang Xiang is very good as there is complete coverage of cellular networks.

2007 OCTS Project Overall Aims:

The following aims are to be achieved through a student centred learning environment:

1. Fostering of mutual cultural understanding between the Miao Villagers and Chinese International School students through collaborative data gathering and presentation of their findings to the Miao community

2. Specific “teacher training outcome” as requested by Zigen: introduction and application of alternative teaching practices, specifically being student centred within experiential learning activities

3. Addressing “eco-tourism” through the establishment of a “seed program” which will:

Inventory Fang Xiang’s human and physical environment’s Eco-tourism assets and publishing them in bi-lingual brochures
Mapping the village’s main land uses: road, paths, major buildings, farm lands
Fostering of appreciation and conservation of Fang Xiang’s human and physical environment through the application of Eco-tourism principals

4. Mutual language development: Mandarin for CIS Students and English for the Fang Xiang Students.

5. Post trip fund raising activities by CIS students, with the aim of educating the CIS community of the constraints and opportunities found in Fang Xiang and a goal of $20,000 raised, to be donated to the Fang Xiang Middle school.
