Shamian
Island, located in Guangzhou is a quiet island of historical value, left
over from the early trading years. In 1861, the British and French
took the island as a concession after the second Opium War. From
this island, European traders carried out their trade with Chinese counterparts.
As the visitor will note, the buildings and park are very much European
in style and provide an excellent "window" into the past century.
In 1946, the KMT Guangzhou Government re-established sovereignty of the
island. The regaining of the island is an example of the "Chinese
people defending their national honour and building their motherland with
hard work" (A brief introduction postcard)
