What a great start to the 2016-17 school year! The New Tower opened on-budget, on-time after two short years of construction and rather more years of planning.
On September 2, we held gratitude celebrations for students, staff and the wider community. During the day, we wore hot-pink T-shirts that incorporated student designs, our phoenix mascot, and the project slogan "Phoenix Soaring".
Indeed, there is a soaring feeling when you experience the new glass-walled spaces with stunning views of the surrounding hills. One of the project's aims has been to create a highly visible and transparent Science & Technology hub that unites our twelve science and design technology labs around an atrium. On the one hand, we seek collaboration among the disciplines of science, math, technology, art and design. We also seek collaboration among and between students and staff, who are now provisioned with a variety of un-timetabled spaces to meet and work together during and outside of classroom hours.
For the first time, we have two full-sized gyms for Secondary and competition use. One of the gyms converts to an assembly hall for whole-school gatherings by Secondary orPrimary students, Graduation, and other special events.
The opening of the New Tower marks a major milestone in our ongoing Phoenix Soaring redevelopment. Additional work ending in 2017-18 will result in a new Cafeteria and Library, as well as further renovations in both Primary and Secondary.
Thank you to the donors, architects, construction team and so many people involved who have made this happen to lift student learning!
