10th September 2005

Our first set of MYP results has been posted in the 'Exam Results' section. The IB results of our 2005 graduating class have also been added.

Growing, growing, growing!

This year we have added another new member of staff, Kelly Throne, bringing the total in the department to eight. Kelly has most recently been teaching in an IB and MYP school in Morocco. She is adjusting well to life in Hong Kong and although she is still learning the local language, she is not afraid to venture out. In fact, she will order and eat anything that has a picture that she can point to! A keen triathlete, she has already brought great energy and enthusiasm to our ranks. Welcome!

  • TI-84 Plus graphing calculators are now available from Mrs. McManus in the business office at the cost price of $820. A 'Texas Instruments' graphing calculator is a requirement for all IB mathematics courses at CIS. In fact, for the first time, all our students from Year 7 through to Year 13 are now using a graphical calculator!

  • We would like to take this opportunity to welcome on board the two newest members of our department. We're sure most of you have seen them around school already but in case you haven't, let us introduce:

    Teresa Wong

    Keith Sanders

Teresa was teaching in Canada and Hong Kong prior to joining CIS, while Keith has flown in from Tianjin. Teresa's Mandarin is very good and she can often be heard coaching Keith, who is picking it up quickly. If you bump into Keith in the hallway, you might want to try and help him practice!

  • Have you ever wondered what kind of life a mathematician leads? Well, why don't you read about some of the greatest mathematicians of our time. Just click on their images on the homepage and find out more. Here is an excerpt from one article describing Newton's achievements (in comparison to those of Einstein):

Newton's claim [to greatness] is obvious. He created modern physics. His system described the behavior of the entire cosmos -- and while others before him had invented grand schemes, Newton's was different. His theories were mathematical, making specific predictions to be confirmed by experiments in the real world. Little wonder that those after Newton called him lucky -- “for there is only one universe to discover, and he discovered it.”
