In the Secondary Division, calculators are used at all levels. At the discretion of the teacher, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 may be required to have a calculator with more than the simple arithmetic operations. At this level calculators should have the square root function, the trigonometric functions, and an inverse button. Calculators may at times be used on tests and examinations; they are often used during regular class periods. The Mathematics Department has basic Casio scientific calculators which are available for purchase (at cost) for those students in Years 7 and 8 who do not already own an adequate machine. Far beyond being simply a child's calculator, this calculator contains the trigonometric functions, common and natural logarithms, and allows the students to calculate powers and roots. It is a calculator they will be able to use well beyond Year 8.
Years 10 and 11, during which students are preparing for their
IGCSE examinations, require the use of a scientific calculator.
Graphing calculators are not yet allowed on IGCSE examinations, but
their
use is permitted during regular class periods at the discretion of
the teacher. The use of graphing calculators is permitted on all IB
examinations, and has been for several years. Higher Level
mathematics and Mathematical Methods courses that will be examined in
the spring of 2000 actually require the use of a graphing calculator.
Graphing calculators are widely used in the teaching of mathematics
at CIS, and all students of IB mathematics are required to own a
TI-82 or TI-83 calculator. The school sells the new TI-83 calculator
from Texas Instruments at the cost price of HK$704. This calculator
is similar in use to the TI-82, but has multiple graphing styles and
added statistical functions.
