Book I, Proposition 3 Given two unequal straight lines, to cut off from the greater a straight line of equal length to the less.

Proof. Draw from C a straight line CI of length equal to AB (proposition I.2). Draw a circle with center C and radius CI. The point of intersection between the circle and CD cuts off a length equal to AB.
