Dr Kenneth D Fryer, together with fellow University of Waterloo faculty member, Dr Ralph G Stanton, has been involved with the Canadian Mathematics Competition from the start. The Competition was originally administered from the high school in St. Mary's, Ontario, and was not centred at Waterloo until 1965. Following the departure of Ralph Stanton to the University of Manitoba, Ken Fryer became the inspirational leader of the Competition, and it would indeed be difficult to conceive of a better person for the task. A firm believer in close cooperation between secondary and university instructors, a gifted speaker, a person genuinely interested in the development of young people, and a supporter of fundamental mathematics, he was an ideal leader for twenty years until his death in 1984.
